I manage networks for several institutions using various internet service providers. Often, DNS from Indonesian ISPs is unstable and occasionally experiences issues. Therefore, to address this, I’ve created my own DNS using VPS and Docker. To mitigate issues with VPS provider networks, I use different VPS providers, ensuring that if one experiences problems with the Upstream DNS, my DNS service can still function. I use AdguardHome for this DNS with customized filters to enhance network security against malware, phishing, and more. This DNS has been operational for almost 1 year and hasn’t encountered Upstream issues. The only challenge lies in some filtered websites, but I resolve it by whitelisting those domains in AdguardHome, restoring their normal functionality.
Additionally, I redirect my DNS to Cloudflare’s DNS. This allows filtering to occur solely within the VPS. This DNS can also be used to access websites blocked by Kominfo without going through AdguardHome’s filtering process. Thus, accessing sites like Reddit remains secure.
